’60 Minutes’ visits Mansfield post office – Show drawn to city to tell story of Lincoln branch’s closing
The Emmy-award winning show “60 Minutes” spent Thursday and Friday at sites throughout Richland County, including five Mansfield post offices and AngelWoods Hideaway Bed and Breakfast, in Lucas.
“We’re doing a story about the U.S. Postal Service, which is in the process of closing a couple thousand post offices,” producer Clem Taylor said. “We’re here in Mansfield looking at the Lincoln branch as an example of what’s going on across the country
“We’re doing this story because, in one way or another, everyone in America is affected by the operations of the postal service,” he said. “And, quite frankly, there really hasn’t been a lot of stories about it. The postal service is trying to find ways to cut costs, while trying to still deliver the mail to every address in the U.S.”

PostalReporter.com received the following message from Darrell See, Local 903 APWU :
I would like to thank and apologize to the patrons that stopped by the Lincoln Branch of the USPS in Mansfield for a scheduled protest that was cancelled; at the last minute 60 Minutes changed their venue for filming. Thank you Mansfield News Journal and 60 Minutes for the exposure to the issue of reviewing 16,000 of the 32,000 offices in America for closure. One of the largest reasons for closure is reported to be a loss of income at the stations and branches. Mark Strong’s article in Federal Times explains that the station and branches will show a loss since they are credited with sales and processing only, not deliveries, Locally, when mail is generated, from south of butler to the shores of Lake Erie in Sandusky, it is processed and credited to Mansfield Processing, except for Saturday mail trucked to Cleveland Ohio. Then, most of the advertising mail would be credited in Akron Ohio and Pennsylvania where the receiving bulk mailing centers are located. Next, if not for a new $50 Billion requirement in excessive pre-funding of expected future retiree health benefits the USPS would have shown a $611 Million Dollar profit for this non-profit, service origination over the last four years according to the APWU. Please contact your local and national government representatives if you want to keep your local USPS.
APWU Criticizes Sen. McCain For Crossing Strikers’ Picket Line
APWU News
The APWU National Executive Board has adopted a resolution criticizing Sen. John McCain for crossing a picket line of striking members of the Writers Guild to appear on the Tonight Show at the end of January. “This callous act by Sen. McCain showed an utter disregard for the efforts of ordinary workers to exact just and fair results in collective bargaining,” the resolution said.
Members of the Writers Guild went on strike Nov. 5, seeking a contract that would give them an equitable share of the revenues from online and DVD distribution of the shows they create. On Feb. 12, Guild members voted to return to work, claiming their demands had been met.

Letter Carriers Set July 1 Picketing in New Jersey to Oppose ‘Contracting Out’ by Postal Service
PATERSON, N.J.- Members of Paterson Branch 120 of the National Association of Letter Carriers will engage in informational picketing on Sunday, July 1, at the Paterson Post Office to protest a growing policy of the U.S. Postal Service to contract out to private firms and individuals the delivery of mail in urban and suburban areas, the postal union announced today.
NALC Branch 120 President Joseph Murone said the Paterson demonstration is one of many planned throughout the nation to bring attention of the public to this new policy that will diminish service to postal customers and endanger the future viability of the Postal Service.
Murone said the Paterson picketing is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the post office, 194 Ward Street. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) is scheduled to participate with the local letter carriers in the protest, along with other local and state officials.
NALC National President William H. Young said letter carriers in the Paterson area “have witnessed first hand this destructive policy of the Postal Service to outsource the delivery of mail to low-wage, no-benefit, part-time contractors instead of career government employees who have gained the trust and respect of American families for the past 118 years.”
“This policy must be reversed quickly before more damage is done,” Young said.
The NALC’s effort to fight privatization of mail delivery has gained strong support in Congress. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) has introduced legislation (S. 1457) to outlaw most contracting out, and in the House of Representatives, Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ) has authored H. Res. 282 which would condemn the practice and urges the Postal Service to halt the practice immediately. The entire New Jersey House delegation has joined as cosponsors of the Sires resolution.
The NALC represents 298,000 active and retired letter carriers of the U.S. Postal Service is all 50 states and U.S. jurisdictions.

Forget the rain, sleet and snow. Outsourcing is what worries a major postal workers union. Concerned that the U.S. Postal Service plans to step up use of contractors to deliver mail in cities and suburban areas, the National Association of Letter Carriers is lobbying Congress to get involved and study the use of contract delivery services. The union plans to draw attention to the issue by picketing postal headquarters on L’Enfant Plaza on Monday.
