A local woman says someone from Nigeria stole her identity, opened multiple accounts in her name and took out a big loan, all things she says she probably would’ve caught except she stayed in the dark for weeks because scammers managed to stop her mail.
The culprits used a free online change of address service known as “Updater, Inc.” That website then forwarded the information to the postal service. Read more

Lawmakers have postal workers backs in Wallingford: wtnh.com
Hundreds of postal workers turned out Wednesday night to a meeting in Wallingford, over plans to shut down the postal processing center there. The postal workers attended in an attempt to save their jobs, and some of Connecticut’s federal lawmakers were right by their side.
Among other cuts the postal service wants to shut down processing centers in Wallingford and Stamford, and handle that mail in Hartford. Seven hundred people work at the center in Wallingford and nearly 300 of them would lose their jobs.
However, the postal workers have some powerful backing as three members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation turned the hearing into a pep rally of sorts promising to fight the cutback plan and save jobs.
Video: Sen. Sanders Fights for the Postal Service
“Sens. Bernie Sanders, Patrick Leahy, Rep. Peter Welch, Gov. Peter Shumlin and nearly 500 Vermonters packed the American Legion hall in White River Junction, Vt., on Wednesday evening to voice strong opposition to the potential closing of one of Vermont’s major postal processing plants. “It makes zero sense at all to be shutting down this processing plant, cutting jobs and slowing down mail service throughout our region,” Sanders said. “Clearly, we need changes in the post office so that it becomes a robust institution in the digital world, but I believe we can make those changes without slashing jobs.” Sanders has introduced the Postal Service Protection Act to maintain mail service to rural communities, avert cuts that could cost thousands of workers their jobs, and help the Postal Service adapt to the digital age.” Read more

A few concerned residents and some postal employees attended a hearing tonight to hear a proposal to move Bryan’s mail processing center to Houston or Austin as a cost saving measure.
“We are looking at every area within our organization of ways that we can consolidate and become more efficient, cut costs by still providing universal service,” said Dionne Montague with the US Postal Service.
Some postal workers say they believe the decision has already been made internally.
“This [meeting] is a show to make everyone think that management cares about our opinion. I don’t think that management cares about our opinion. I think they are going to do it anyway, so we are basically wasting our time here,” said one US Postal Service employee.
“Let the people know this is going on. This is a farce,” said another angry employee.
