Customer Told to Mail Packages When More Postal Window Clerks Are Available

A Postal Customer was told not to bring her packages to the post office until after 3:30 p.m.

From PostalReporter.com reader:

….a customer at the Swissvale Post Office (prn: Pennsylvania)  videotaped a manager who was totally disrespectful and rude (as the letter carriers there can attest to).  The Manager at the counter is  (redacted by PR) and we have a long line of grievances for hostile work environments generated by his type of behavior.   I hope this serves as notice to management that there are many eyes on the USPS right now and we don’t need this kind of exposure.

This manager had a 27 year employee fired recently for his abusive attitude towards workers and she flipped out on him. You can see his management style is becoming the norm.It all results from the District Manager in Western PA. District abuse of his subordinates then down to the craft employees who have to deal with this every day. PMG Donahoe needs to look into DM___  and HR __ Manager , and most of the POO’sS and MSCO’s and all the abuse craft employees put up with.

  1. After working for the USPS for almost 25 years, I’m not surprised by the Supervisor’s poor attitude, disrespect towards a paying customer and ignorance of mailing policy. As the saying goes, ‘the fish is rotten from the head down’. The sad part is that my supervisors at the Southern Connecticut Processing and Distribution Center are less competent than this fine example of Postal Management.

  2. And yes I am against every manager. I think from Donabloe on down to every workroom floor in the postal service all micro-management make work positions should be eliminated. We are paid to deliver mail. We don’t need a line of inbred idiots shuffling papers and reports to other idiots up the line to fudge their numbers to collect more bonuses. 8 hours volume for 8 hours pay And if there is no management we don’ need a union either.

  3. silly wabit get your head out of managements ass. Don’t you get it that they want to get rid of 220000 of you low seniority scabs.

  4. This supervisor gives the word moron new meaning. He will be promoted because this attitude fits in to Danaho-ho’s new service standard of less service for the same money.

  5. And out really tickled me that these postal workers on here, who are trashing this manager, without even knowing him, are probably the same lazy ass union wingnut who make it hard on most other employees who have to work harder to do the jobs that they don’t. They’re the ones that you always see in the union office. Trying to justify their useless existence. They’re against any manager. So, it doesn’t matter the circumstances.

  6. People in America are so “entitled”. We all think our dookie don’t stink. We could care less about our fellow man waiting behind us. Consideration is but a word. No one cared to consider the events that led up to this. I’m so glad that our court system doesn’t run on evidence like this. Sure… There are crappy managers everywhere. But, there are misjudged ones too. If u tell me you pay my salary, and I know you don’t… I’m done working with you. I’m pissed now. So, the silly girl loss the communication link. But she edged it on because she had an agenda of U-tube fame. Totally sickening American behavior.

  7. THE POSTAL SERVICE IS NOT A GOVERNMENT BODY! YOU DO NOT… PAY THE SALARIES OF POSTAL WORKERS! Now… You’re educated.

  8. This Manager or Postmaster or 204-B is nothing more than a lazy jerk that instead of bringing more revenue to our organization, spends his time running our customers out of the office. As a postal employee I feel disgusted and sick to my stomach to see how they treat our customers. This guy should be fired at once. Let him go and collect empty bottles on the streets. It’s what he and all of those jack asses who treat our customers like that. That’s typical of management, to run an establishment understaffed and expecting to get the same profits. Management should get their heads out of their @$$es and realize that “Better days are NOT coming, because of crap like that.” Stop sitting and playing on your pc all day, and DO YOUR JOB.!!!

  9. I am 31years on the job with the postal service and would.like to apologize to the non-employees who we ,service every day. Forgive our managers for they know not what they do,this is why they are managers because 99%of them couldnt do a carrier or clerk job if they tried!

  10. Postal Blues and Rain, Snow, Sleet or Hail is a ficticial account about what goes on at your local post office. Check it out on Amazon.com, nikkicoe.com. Unbelievable. Sad but so true. The Postal Service is putting itself out of business.

  11. I tell ya, if that happened at my PO , the Postmaster would have Packed and shipped that guy out right along with that ladies packages ! Like what folks before me have said , Please don’t think ALL of us Postal workers are like this guy !

  12. Lot’s of unanswered questions here…..Were the items properly prepared and ready for mailing? This is the most common problem with parcels. Now let’s say that all was in order. There was a definite history with this supervisor. Good or bad? Guess. But let’s get real here. There are alternatives to this. The clerk and supervisor should have sold this customer on using the USPS website. There all if her needs could be met and she would never have to go deal with that unfortunately all to common example of incompetent management. Free carrier pickup, discounts on postage, and free mailing boxes. That’s USPS.com……check it out.

  13. ter me what i do when my post office close at 600 pm and a costomer com whit 330 hundred to certfied whit returd receipt at 530 pm

  14. Hey Richard Carroll,
APWU does not reprent Postmaster or Supervisors,Get your facts right before you accused someone, how can you make sure they fire this guy???? What about his right to due process? an allegation does not translate into a guilty judment, everyone should have the right to face the accuser andthe agency must prove these allegations, before they discipline this person.
In the other hand, it appears that a misconduct took place, however, we must
not make a judgement before we get all the facts
    Regards

  15. I have worked for the USPS for going on 30 yrs now and this certainly isn’t “Service”. I am ashamed to have these type people especially in management positions. You come to my post office and I will gladly accept your packages, and money, and yes, YOU DO pay my salary and I know it. This is a poor example of management. In all fairness if we have videos of all the good and pleasant window mailing experiences there would be an awfully lot of those too….it’s just the negative garners all the attention. I hope this person receives appropriate disciplinary measures. This is NOT how all postal employees are. People, if at all possible, in your travels stop by a SMALL community post office and they will give much better service and with a smile..they appreciate it more…and they need the business and revenue much worse than those bigger offices.

  16. This is the organization that I have given my career to. I am so deeply ashamed of what it’s become. I’m the asshole, I saw this coming 20 years ago and should have made a move then. We are like a tree that continues to leaf out a bit even after the main trunk has died.

It really doesn’t matter anymore because it’s over. 8 years, 2 months and 12 days until I can retire (not that I’m counting), do I make it?

  17. Who gives a SH*T or cares any more. We were told that by March 2012 our PD&C would close up and only 53 clerks out of 300 would be kept to service the 3 major POs in our area, Clerks with 28 years will be LAID OFF. But we’ll still have all the F*ucking managers. 1 to 1 STUPIDVISOR to clerk ratio. Maybe they’ll have 1 to 1 Upper management to StUPIDSVISOR by then.

  18. I love this stuff. We had our PMG video this morning about how bad things are and then you watch stuff like this jerk refusing revenue. Just do it JERK. Or tomorrow you will be on the unemployment line or promoted to OIC. Management just doesn’t get it. We need the money a hole. If I was that customer, I would be going to my UPS store. Management has taken the word service out of the USPS. Bring back service and it Will bring back customers.

  19. Just call the Postal Inspectors for your area. Let them know what happened to you, but also make copies and hand them to the inspectors. Make sure they fire this guy. Otherwise they will just suspend this guy. The APWU will save his ass. Don’t let them get away with this. Good Luck with your case.
PS: Make sure you sue them for losing business.

  20. This is to the poster of the video!! PLEASE do not think employees are like this, we WANT to move the mail. However now you see what we have to deal with in management positions. Also understand this is how he talked to you; a customer , just think about how bad it is behind closed doors!!! Please make a copy of this and send a formal complaint to the Postmaster General and send it the O.I.G. Something will be done! But they will just most likely move him to another office, if was a clerk at the counter they would be fired!

  21. I think its ridiculous how this woman was treated. The post office says they are losing so much money because of the internet and they are trying to eliminate jobs of craft employees, but then they turn around and refuse business. Thats a shame. The problem with the post office is that they dont care about customers. All they care about is numbers on reports. I think if any jobs need eliminated in the post office it should be in management. They do not know anything about customer service! It’s about time someone stands up to them. Maybe more people should do the same. If they did maybe the post office would shape up and learn how to treat their customers!

  22. As 32 year postal clerk and 20 plus window clerk i must say that this supv needs to be fired. immediately. i work in a one man office that is very busy. i sometimes have ebay customers who bring in 20 30 packages at a time. i give them service just like the customer who only wants a book of stamps. further, if its 1 minute prior to closing and customer walks in with 20 or more packages you MUST give them service. of course, thats old school. but the new and improved postal service thinks otherwise. maybe there was a qualified window clerk on standby in the back office. either way. this guy was wrong. very wrong and needs to be disciplined. the new and improved usps discipline these days is to simply transfer him to another office.. its happened before and will again. and fyi.. if they used all the time arguing to simply serve the customer all would have been happy. duh

  23. People… Go to the UPS Store. It is a pleasure in there!! One person working and doing notory public, with 12 people in line, and it took only 11 minutes to clear everyone out and finish the customers’ business!!!!!! Try that speed at the Post Office, with just 1 person in line. You will be there forever, because the lazy window clerk decides to take a stroll to the back room for who knows what!!! Upper management favor stupidity in supervisors and managers. The way the supervisors/ managers treat employees is exactly the way that knuckle head person treated the customer in the video, and worse. Too bad the video was not aimed correctly to capture the face of the stupid person working for the Post Office. There are thousands more annoying postal management employees just like the one in the video. The customer is mailing packages so the post office can receive revenue, but what an idiot of an employee, who should be an
    ex-employee soon!!

  25. I retired from the Postal Service as a clerk this January after 20 years. I can’t believe any one should talk to a Postal Customer that way at all. I worked in a small office we treated all are customers like they were family. Yes sometime it was tiresome but we wanted their business. That manager should be fired.or demoted.

  26. 1>Sounds like my supervisor. Rude to customers, rude to employees. Not proud of USPS anymore. The few bad apples have ruined it forever. I quit. Will not give USPS any future revenue.
2>Customer should locate nearest APC or have carrier pick up orders.
3>Very interested in the handling of this documented case=FIRE HIS ASS

  27. Customer first for without customers, there is no business hence, there is no job.

Perhaps a bit of customer education coupled with manager etiquette is in order. The manager should always be polite, courteous, and offer assistance whenever and wherever needed.

Unless the customer doesn’t have the necessary tools, the manager (or clerk) could suggest the customer pay/print/attach her labels to her packages from home. Then, all she needs to do is walk into the PO and simply drop her packages off on the counter and offer a quick, “Hello? I’m leaving these packages. Postage is already taken care of.”

No need to wait on line.

Overall, I would agree that the manager was a bit over the top. If the PO closes at 5PM and the customer came in at 5-minutes to 5, the PO is still considered open and as such, the packages should be accepted. If, however, the doors have already been locked, ie; it is 30-seconds past 5PM and the customer is standing outside pleading to open back up so she could get her packages in the system, sorry, we’re closed. You’ll have to come back tomorrow.

Sadly, this story diverts from the customer’s bad experience by focusing on the postal employee and how employees have to deal with this kind of behavior from managers and supervisors on a daily basis. That’s not the point and shouldn’t be the focus of the story. The focus of the story should be on that of this customer’s bad experience and what remedial solutions can be offered/provided to ensure another customer, even this customer herself, never goes through such an experience going forward.

An issue or concern has been identified. Now work on fixing it!

  28. How many packages did she have that day? One customer should only be allowed to have 10 items period, its not easy as it use to be w/the IRT where you could hit 10 for quantity of same amount postage and then just spit them out w/out you having to hit the zip code for each letter. Just 10 meter postage labels for ? 1.08 lrg env. easy peesy. Any well I once had a customer who had 21 envelopes, I said I can do 10 but that she’d have to get back in line for the other 11 to be processed so that the line would not be held up so long. She didn’t like it but she did it because she understood yes the line, which was long, would be held up and there were only 2 clerks that day. Our office is in a heavy business district and you have to keep the line moving people!!! If she’s such a savvy business person, get a scale and do your click n ship thru the USPS website, that way she could’ve come in at 3:30pm with postage already on her packages and left them at the end counter, or back dock for mailhandler, or if small enough and not over 13oz in the mail slot!!! Good grief woman ask for suggestions and help!!!

  29. The supervisor needs to be fired! He has lost his mind. I am a former employee and I can see why they are going under with supv. like that. Take the damn packages you idiot. It isn’t his fault that USPS has cut employees but he should have taken the mailand she DOES pay his salary..What a fruit cake he is…

  30. This stupid manager should have offered click and ship from home. Her carrier could have picked up her packages where she didn’t have to see his sorry behind any more.!!!!!!!!!!! Where is the POSTMASTER GENERAL?

  31. I hope this supervisor gets fired. He is a shameful example of what so many customers have to put up with. In Irvine, I have heard the supervisor raise her voice and say “No, you listen to ME!”, and then goes on to lecture the woman about how it’s not a big deal that they can’t find her package. The poor clerks seem to be scared to death of her. They all seem to be miserable, but I would be too if I was talked to that way by that horrible woman.

  32. As a retired Postmaster of a large office I find this action totally crazy. If this guy had worked for me I would have fired him on the spot. USPS has dealt with late customers and long lines for years, but this is definitely not the solution. And by the way mr lousy supervisor, where do you think the money for your paycheck comes from. Not from taxes.

  33. If anyone that works for the USPS believes this correct behavior for a place of bussiness that depends on service for it’s sole existance, you are a dumb a…
