Customer Told to Mail Packages When More Postal Window Clerks Are Available

A Postal Customer was told not to bring her packages to the post office until after 3:30 p.m.

From PostalReporter.com reader:

….a customer at the Swissvale Post Office (prn: Pennsylvania)  videotaped a manager who was totally disrespectful and rude (as the letter carriers there can attest to).  The Manager at the counter is  (redacted by PR) and we have a long line of grievances for hostile work environments generated by his type of behavior.   I hope this serves as notice to management that there are many eyes on the USPS right now and we don’t need this kind of exposure.

This manager had a 27 year employee fired recently for his abusive attitude towards workers and she flipped out on him. You can see his management style is becoming the norm.It all results from the District Manager in Western PA. District abuse of his subordinates then down to the craft employees who have to deal with this every day. PMG Donahoe needs to look into DM___  and HR __ Manager , and most of the POO’sS and MSCO’s and all the abuse craft employees put up with.

  1. BTW instead of cutting jobs by seniority, maybe they should look at people like this first… Oh, that’s right, our Unions wouldn’t allow that. Check out your kids teachers – can’t fire the bad ones there either.

  2. Shame on us! Who does this guy think pays him? Of course she pays him as do all the rest of us. Maybe he should look at the check he receives every other Friday… Mine says “From our Customers” … I repeat … shame on us!

  3. Such a shame…and some wonder why we lose business. Mindset from management trickles down. Rude employees and managers. Turning customers away should NEVER HAPPEN. PERIOD. WE ARE A DOG DAMN SERVICE NOT A BUSINESS. The more offices that close the MORE PEOPLE WILL TURN TO UPS AND FED EX. Get your heads out of your asses you beltway turds and do something to keep people using our SERVICE. Doesn’t surprise me it’s a black worker either.

  4. Has anyone mentioned that she could do her postage online and then just drop off the packages or have her carrier pick them up?? This would save her money and time. This does not excuse the postal manager’s behavior–it is still wrong. But that solution would work for everyone involved.

  5. Unfortunately, this happens on a daily basis in my station! Management’s abuse is common to both employees and customers, and you wonder why we are going broke! I like my job and have wonderful customers, my business customers no longer go to the PO because of this type of treatment! The use me, for stamps and package pick up, many have closed their po boxes because the mail isn’t in there when it’s suppose to be. It’s job security for me and I encourage them to do it. If the post office was serious about saving money, they would terminate all the managers…….because most of them barely have high school diplomas and can hardly put together a grammatically correct sentance!

  6. This is exactly the problem now. We schedule according to budget and not to needs. When you start looking at your customers as a nuisance then it’s time for a change in management. You cannot continue to cry about revenue when you’re doing things such as this. To turn things around we need to embrace revenue anyway we can generate it. Service is all we sell and apparently we don’t want to do this anymore. I don’t know any business that can survive if they don’t provide a service or a product.

  7. This sounds like my postmaster. He tells people who come regularly to our office that they should come in before 330. We dont close until 5 and have 2 clerks on at all times.
There is not any reason for his harassment of customers.

  8. FIRE HIM NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What kind of person is this? Just like my supervisor ! No matter how wrong he is, it’s his way or the highway.

  9. To top it off, a clerk complained to management and tried to file a grievance. Weeks later she showed up as a 204b in management training at a different station in Seattle. A month later she transferred to California and is most likely finding jobs for her relatives there by now. This is what we are faced with every day. Now let’s do the math. Say the average pay for the 110,000 managers nationwide is $65,000. This is $7150000000. 7 BILLION 150 Million DOLLORS a year. Donabloe says we are losing 8 billion and have to lay off 220,000 workers. The OIG and postal inspectors work for management and target mainly the workers. They are fully aware this is going on but do nothing. $65,000 is a low average not including the bonuses and perk they give themselves. This figure could easily be beyond 15 billion. FIRE THEM ALL OR AT LEAST SOMEONE INVESTIGATE IT, PLEASE!!! We just want to work and make it to retirement.

  10. WTF…post this everywhere and anywhere you can….the only thing the supervisor missed telling her was to do it online!!!! you, know what, maybe she does not have internet, maybe, her area is is underserved…..hate to break it to the USPS, but ther are may areas of the country that just can’t hook up to click and ship…it seems high speed internet access is involved….huh…go figure….and until the governemt provides it…it is us, USPS

bless this person for recording it….now if we all could get ours to do the same….i think it could happen…..us they like, the assholes who are called upon (supervisors who know squat) to resolve complaints….not so much….

  11. Get this. The station manager was given his job at international station in Seattle Washington by his parents who both where high level EAS managers in Denver. This was his 1st job in the post office. Normally you have 20 years or more before you make it to this level. The father retired and the mother gave him a subcontracted outsourced job for the USPS. While getting a postal pension he is a civilian contractor doing mystery shopper surveys for his son’s station. You don’t have to guess who got the most bonuses in Seattle. This is why if you lined up the 6 foot desks in a row of the 110,000 managers it would be 125 miles long. I say fire every single person that doesn’t work or support the mail stream. The savings from not having to do collective bargaining with these inbred thieves will pay for 3 more window clerks in every station nationwide. No more lines!!!

  12. If the public KNEW how postal workers were treated day in and day out….we can’t provide service…we can’t win…if we take the time to give service…we pay dearly for helping you because “some computer program in some other state will pop a report that says…”your clerk sucks”.. or something like that in prettier words…we can’t win…we are sorry..we want to help you but our hands are tied…

  13. The offfice probably had two places to be waited on. In the time the manager took to make a fool of himself he could have opened up and taken care of this customer or other customers and this would never have happened. We better hope we can get all the revenue we can. It does take that long to close out at the end of the day and if he just had that one customer it wouldn’t take any time.

  14. I really do not believe the nerve of that clerk! Dosent this fool know what the Postal Service is facing right now? He probably dosent care because he probably has over thirty years and it wont affect his ignorant behind anyway! What really is a shame is that he could have serviced the customer while he took the time to argue back and forth with her. What an idiot!

  15. If you were in my town I as your letter carrier would come and pick up your packages and bring them back to the PO. Service is all we have to offer. This supervisor should be fired from his position!

  16. Hey dumbass James, YES, she does pay his salary moron. Who do you think is buying postage ?

No different than when you buy groceries, gas, whatever.

Why do our checks say “From our CUSTOMERS” on the back ?

You HAVE to be in mgmt. You sure sound like it.

  17. I applaud this guy BTW AMEN TO you James!! AMEN!! Everybody thinks that the customer is always right not when you are a government customer!!

  18. That is unbelievable! Refusing to take care of a customer’s mailing needs! What an idiot. He should have been happy for the revenue. Very poor customer service, but I will give the manager his due. The W. PA. District Manager, and his POOM might have the guy running ragged to make the numbers work. An impossible task, from totally impossible people to please.

  19. Whoever made this video……THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The public needs to see MORE of this. This isn’t even the tip of the iceberg.

  20. Whats the point in posting this video? We know what goes on at the Post Office and nobody cares!! F.Y.I. Little girl the Post Office does not receive any tax dollars!! It is an independent branch of the federal government that is dependent upon the sales of stamps and postal services for operating revenue. That wise crack everybody tells our mailman we pay your salary umm no you don’t. And I’m sure you don’t pay the salary of the gentleman in the video as I’m sure you can’t afford umm $75,000 to $120,000 in postage a year yea. So before you run your mouth do your homework. The man in my opinion was not disrespectful he just stated the fact that if you bring your packages in after 3:30pm he will not accept them. That said. You clearly contradict yourself when you state “you are unable to come earlier because you work.” then you turn around and say you mail your packages at all those different times given. That said if you know the bank closes at 4:00 why would you wait until 3:30 to show up there? The postal service is bleeding money and that said if his boss has not authorized his clerks any overtime there is nothing he can do about extra clerks as there probably are none after 2pm. Which means nobody works for free so his clerk needs to have all customers’ transactions completed by one minute before closing and all major transactions completed about 45 minutes prior to closing to ensure his clerk does not go into overtime. I’m good friends with 2 people who work at the post office and I have seen what goes on there first hand. I have worked in customer service most of my life and I now work for myself. One thing I tell my postal worker friends “I am sick and tired of hearing you guys apologize to these people these animals.” They all think the customer is always right come to my business and you will see they are right if they are right but most times they are wrong. This attitude has brought me happiness the financial capacity to retire on my own retirement is 3 years or less. why should this man kiss up and be apologetic to you ? Your measly 10 packages don’t mean squat to him or the service go mail them at fedex or UPS! Whats that oh you’re coming back because they are way higher? Thats what I thought now get in there before 3:30 and STFU!

  21. madam i am soo sorry that u had to listen to that type of verbal abuse from a incompetent station mgr pleasse send that video to your locasl media and to CNN

  22. I work for the P.O. and that is definantly not customer service. That Manager should be fired for disrespect to a customer. The customer came in to mail packages and she should have been allowed to. Even if the station was short staffed he could have apologised to the other customers for the long wait.

  23. Kathy, exactly right! the basics of a retail business and customer service. Just what we lack at the Post Office due to upper managments non existence of skills needed to run a business.

  24. So, tell me why the manager couldn’t help the customer? Seriously, if you go to most grocery stores and lines form, more registers open. He should have smiled, thanked her for her continued business and taken care of her. Period.

  25. Come to my office. I would love the revenue. Besides my staffing is depended upon these type of transactions. My clerks are the best. I am proud that they take care of all customers.

  26. THE VERDICT IS IN:
WE THE CUSTOMERS FIND THE WINDOW CLERK GUILTY.
THE WINDOW CLOSES AT 5PM, GO F YOURSELF WINDOW CLERK, YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHEN TO BRING REVENUE. IF I ARRIVE AT 4:59, AND HAVE 30 PACKAGES, YOU WILL SERVE ME AND LIKE IT. I DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANY LIP FROM YOU OR THAT C _ N T BEHIND THE SCENES.

DEAR CUSTOMER: I am sorry to hear and review that pathetic video,
TODAY, I AM NOT PROUD TO WORK FOR THE USPS
THE MANAGER OF THAT SITE WILL HAVE TO BE LET GO, THE DAMAGE IS DONE.

  27. If it’s an A.O. with less than 100 man years the manager can do craft work. Let him man the window for the remainder of their hours and help the people out.
This guy is just like everyother tie…they want the numbers but are unwilling to do the job to get them.
You are either in: mail processing, maintenance, or …..customer service. This guy is a joke.
If I worked at a store and he came in I’d close my lane on him.

  28. A couple of years ago, I tried to send a package and the clerk refused to process my package unless I sent it priority. After that incident, I sent all my packages through the Automated Postal Center or stamps.com. No need to deal with rude clerks/managers.

  29. Siobahn, I work in much the same situation and the customer gets taken care of regardless. If a mailer makes a habit of bringing several packages in right at closing then a conversation is in order but it should be respectful and designed to give the best service possible. We’re there for the customer not the reports, checklists and other BS.

  30. I am a clerk at a small Post Office.I close alone in the evening. We have many reports, mail dispatch, deposit, sorting carrier mail, signing in carriers accountables, sending out registered mail etc… and very little time to do all .Normally this is done within the alloted time. I have told certain customers to come in earlier I believe the supervisor was correct .We do all need to do what we can to keep costs down as does this customer if she really wants to stay in business. Customers regularly coming to your office know how long their mail processing takes .Come in with 45 minutes of work 5 minutes before close sorry no take the mail that time and inform the customer they need do their business eailer or go to a larger office.I do believe the clerks should be better staffed there is no back up if people are ill or take vacations. Heaven forebid you might have a moment to breath. Productivety! PS bring your own TP its not in the budget. Also racist remarks really how small you are

  31. I cannot believe this kind of treatment occurred at a Postal Facility. Management closely watch how the Clerks are treating the customers daily. I cannot believe a Manager himself would treat anyone in this manner! A window clerk would be fired if this would happen! Definitely this would not happen in Texas. So do not go bashing all Postal employees for one idiot that may have been having a bad day! I, myself get bad customer service at other company’s also, so do not try to act as if it doesn’t happen at other places. Like restrauants, retail stores, over the phone services! Stop trying to make like it only could happen at the Postal Service!!

  32. F that bitch we’ve been trying to chase customers away for 30 years . Doesn’t she get it ? Every day we have a stand up talk about customer service .Then we hit the street and this goes on . Remember the old saying all we have to sell is customer service ? I didn’t think so . That was decades ago . Piss on the american way ! Let the indians do the customer service their good at it . Maybe they can sell them a hotel room and a slushee !!!!!!!

  33. It’s ALL about meeting ‘numbers’ for Pay-for Performance’ and fluffing up the whole local management’s resumes for another undeserved promotion, and more PFP bonuses.

  34. The customer was told to bring her packages in BEFORE 3:30pm not after. What time does this PO close???? If they close at 4pm and a customer walks in after 3:30 with alot of packages – it could take a half hour to help that customer while other customers are waiting in line. That isn’t fair to those customers. There aren’t enough window clerks and the PO isn’t going to hire anymore full time clerks. Unfortunately, the PO believes that in order to save the PO they have to get rid of the workers not the management. I’m sorry this customer had a run in with a supervisor – trying dealing with these individuals on a day to day basis.

  35. In all of the discussions surrounding the Postal Service no one in Congress has raised the issue of managerial incompetence. The autocratic, dysfunctional culture has been well documented and yet no one wants to address that. Senior management and the Board of Governors have repeatedly been caught with their pants down and no one wants to address that.
Virtually every solution offered ignores the fundamental problems confronting the Postal Service. We don’t need to eliminate more workers we need a better, committed management and we need oversight that recognizes the value of the Postal Service as useful national institution.

  36. By the time, the STUPID Stupievisor had gotten done with his line of BS, the packages should have been done and on their way. We do it ALL the time in our PO. That must be why they are trying to CLOSE our office. WE PROVIDE SERVICE!

  37. The top of the article doesn’t seem to have it right. According to the video, the manager wants her to bring the packages in before 3:30 PM when there are 2 clerks working, not after 3:30 PM. Either way, the customer shouldn’t be told when to come in or not to mail a package. The retail hours are as posted and the sender is correct that staffing is not her problem. If she waited in line, then she has the right to mail her packages.

  38. only one clerk after 330 the regs say 10 or more packages we can refuse and ask them to set up an appointment
this manager is this way because she wants cutomers behund her to wait 20 minutes which if he is mystery shopped and has a wait time of 5 minutes or more he can be fired

  39. Has anyone ever noticed that almost all government facilities have been on 60 Minutes, 20/20, Dateline, etc. but never inside the Post Office? Wonder why? guess the Post Office has so much to hide from the public.

  40. Then they want to have meetings about “customer connect” and getting more business. “Forlorn and lost here we tread” my fellow postal workers. The future’s uncertain and the end is right around the corner when you treat customers like that.

  41. They will never investigate abuse in the Post Office. Its the norm and they feel they have the right to do it.

  42. Now you know why postal employees go postal on their supervisors.
They have to put up with this every day for their whole careers.

  43. That’s a dang shame. This employee should have been fired immediately and the customer’s packages mailed for free that day.

Somewhere, someplace, a village is being deprived.

  44. Like I said they want the customers to go else where. I went to 3 P.O because the lines were to the door. If we keep giving poor customer service because we don’t have clerks at the windows it’s lost business to UPS.
