APWU: Locations Announced For 740 New Jobs in the Motor Vehicle Craft

In accordance with the 2010-2015 Collective Bargaining Agreement, the USPS has agreed to establish 740 new assignments in Vehicle Maintenance Facilities. A list provided to the union on Aug. 30 [PDF | XLS] specifies the locations for the new positions and indicates whether they are Level 8, 9, or 10 Automotive Technician or Lead Technician positions.

Under the terms of the contract, the new jobs are being created so that members of the APWU bargaining unit can perform work that was previously done by contractors.

“This is good news for the APWU,” said Motor Vehicle Service Craft Director Bob Pritchard.

“Locals should immediately submit information request forms asking local management what subcontracted duties will be brought in-house to provide work for the individuals assigned to the new jobs,” he said. “That is the only way to ensure these new jobs are being posted properly.

“If additional positions are needed because of general understaffing, additional jobs — beyond 740 on the list — should be posted.”

  1. When is 1300 L street going to announce their lay-offs of SIEU employees working at their DC HQ bldng?

  2. We are supposed to get 1- 8 mechanic, 3-9 lead techs, 1-10 lead tech. We already have 5 lead techs and not enough mechanics! Who the hell made this up? Oh yeah, management probably! I wish they would get rid of 2- supervisors and 1- manager and let us do our work! Oh what a wonderful world it would be.

  3. I’m a city carrier and recently passed the 943/944 tests. The written exam was extremely difficult, if I wasn’t a car nut would never had passed it. No way a shade tree mechanic could pass. Anyone know how to apply for these new jobs, through e-ressign???

  4. are these FT career jobs or as Pacific Area is tring to do, Postal Assistants (PSE) @ $15 hr.. At that rate any good Tch. could make a weeks pay at that rate in his driveway in two days.

  5. I agree. We were allowed eleven new tractor trailer driving positions at our facility, but so far we only have one person interested. Management says they can`t get anyone to apply ( $14.00hr starting pay + they only advertised online ). It sounds like they really don`t want anyone to apply that way they can keep giving the work to contractors. Great contract so far 😛

  6. The chart lists many new positions as “Tech 9” which appears to be an error. Most of these new postions should be PS08 Technicians, PS09 is a Lead Technician position. Typically there are about 10 PS07 Mechanics or PS 08 Technicians for each Lead Technician position.

What’s more merely “authorizing” these positions does not mean they will be filled. It has been extremely difficult to attract qualified automotive mechanics and technicians for several years now because of low starting pay and disagreeable work hours. While the poor economy makes it more likely that USPS will find some who are willing to take the job, for many the USPS would not be their first choice.
