DMA Applauds Postal Service’s New Cost-Cutting Proposals

Press Release from the Direct Marketing Association

August 12, 2011 – The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) applauds Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe for proposing new cost-cutting ideas for the US Postal Service (USPS) for Congress and the postal community to examine. To return to financial stability, the Postal Service has stated that it is seeking legislative changes to allow for network and workforce adjustments.

The Postal Service faces imminent insolvency due to declining mail volume. Insolvency of the USPS will harm the $1 trillion “mail” segment of our nation’s economy and the millions of jobs it supports. Mailers can no longer fund the excess capacity in the USPS network and its corresponding employee complement through postage. USPS must right-size its network to match the new reality of lower mail volume.

“Every effort to bring the postal service back from the brink of insolvency must be examined,” said Jerry Cerasale, DMA’s senior vice president of government affairs. “We applaud the Postmaster General for expanding that dialogue.”

  1. They don’t think that far ahead. The modern corporate mentality is just take whatever isn’t nailed down now. Bottom line now. Maximum profit now.

  2. Why wouldn’t the DMA support the new proposals. That way the DMA can still get thier advertisements mailed on the PUBLIC’s dime for less than what it costs to actually process their mail (?) !Talk about a BAIL OUT!!!
Only one problem, who will buy the stuff that their ads are trying sell when no one makes enough to live on???

  3. The only reason the U.S.P.S. has come up with this proposal is because of the ISSA-BURROS bill that will be before Congress when they come back from their recess. That bill would reduce managerial positions by 30% in the first year and would put the Postal Service under the oversight of a commission until it could achieve fiscal soundness. The proposal by the U.S.P.S. gives them oversight of their operations (which they presently have), removes past and future annuitants into a system run by the Postal Service ( no more C.S.R.S. or F.E.R.S.) and places all retirees on Medicaid at age 65. All of their cost cutting measure come at the expense of the hourly employees.

  4. WHO PUT THE DMA IN CHARGE? ONE DAY THEY WILL HAVE TO PAY THE FULL PRICE TO GET SERVICE, THEN WE WILL SEE WHO IS CRYING. THEY HAVE BEEN GETTING OFF EASY FOR YEARS!

  5. I would applaud the USPS’ efforts to increase postage on mailings from the members of the DMA to better reflect the actual costs incurred in handling those mailings. How does the DMA feel about THAT?

  6. Incredible. More advertising to hype up consumers about a topic that is not covered in any detail and are not knowledgeable enough to know it is a push for Congress to break the contracts the USPS has signed.
