Post Office ReNamed After Fallen Vet On Closure List

A Gold Star mother who worked to rename a borough post office in honor of their fallen heroes said she’s devastated that the building now is on a list of post offices that could be closed.

But Pamela Schwarz, mother of Marine Lance Cpl. Michael A. Schwarz, a Carlstadt native who was killed by sniper fire in Iraq’s Al Anbar province in November 2006, said the possible closing of the Carlstadt office is “a travesty.”

Schwarz began a campaign to have the branch renamed for her son and for Staff Sgt. Frank T. Carvill, another Carlstadt native killed in Iraq, when she learned that Congress had passed legislation allowing Westwood’s post office to be dedicated to Marine Sgt. Christopher Hrbek, a borough native who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
