Florida letter carrier regrets taking one day of sick leave in 43 years with USPS

Miami, FL, Letter Carrier Samuel Dukes has one regret in his 43 years of service — he once had to use a day of his sick leave.

“I dislocated my knee, but I was able to come to work the next day,” Dukes said. “I came to the Post Office looking for a job and now I do what I need to do — come to work every day.”

Such dedication has helped Dukes — who works at the Quail Heights Post Office — accrue more than 4,000 leave hours. He’s reluctant to use them since he views sick leave as a benefit similar to an insurance policy.

“You might need that policy some day, and if you do, you won’t have to worry about getting a paycheck,” he said.

  1. CORRECTION:
$2K per year and 2 years of accumulated sick leave equals $4k per year –
25 years to recover $100k, Bud

  2. DO THE MATH!

    FOR EXAMPLE:
    ANNUAL SALARY? $50K per year
APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS OF ACCRUED SICK LEAVE – WORTH? $100K
2 YEARS OF SICK LEAVE TAKEN INTO RETIREMENT (CSRS) – WORTH? APPROX. $2K per year
BREAK EVEN POINT? 50 years after retiring

ARE YOU FEELING ANY AFTER EFFECTS FROM THAT INJURED KNEE? IF YOU HAVEN’T BY NOW, I BET YOU WILL IN THE NEXT 50 YEARS! GOOD LUCK BUD!

  3. When I started at the PO back in ’85 as a PTF I saw a mailhandler who had been at the PO 41 years die on the clock. Guess what the PO did for him. a supervisor punched him off the clock after he died. I asked the supervisor about it and was told , his wife would get 8 hours pay for him.

  4. With 43 years he must be regular C.S. not FERS so he will get credit towards retirement which will add probably another $2500 to $3000 per year to his annuity. Seems like a good deal to me !

  5. God bless him and his health…For everyone like him there is one like ME to
cancell the insanity. 28 years in,,,, 0 sick hours…..I not loosing half the sick time and give back to PO. He will have given them almost a year sick time back or a loss of a years salary. Again glad he is healthy though….PS It might be the wife
at home???????? ha ha ha ha

  6. Reality: If you were ever hurt that bad and needed to take off for weeks or months, management would find a way to fire you. If your aren’t 100% then management doesn’t want you. It’s that way for disabled vets now too. The only time i’ve seen management show any sympathy is when someone is dying, like with cancer. Management treats people like horses. They ride you till you die, then find another. They’ll hire someone younger, dumber, and substantially cheaper. Why pay one older guy with alot of time in when they can hire two new guys for the same money? This guy will also get the same cheap plaque that everyone else does in the end and he’ll be able to trade in some of his sick time for a small bonus. The work ethic is admirable, but in the end management is just using him. Sad, but true. It’s all business these days.

  7. with 43 years under his belt, i hardly think he needs so much “insurance”. time to RETIRE old man. there’s more to life than work.

  8. I wish all craft employees had the same work ethic as he does. The post office would be making a profit if they did
