Man charged in beating of Massachusetts postal supervisor

The following is a press release from the US Attorney’s Office, District of Massachusetts

BOSTON, Mass. – A New Bedford man appeared in U.S. District Court today to face charges of assaulting a federal employee.

RONALD VIGEANT, 52, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leo T. Sorokin on a criminal complaint charging him with assaulting a supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service. Specifically, the complaint charges, among other things, that VIGEANT approached the supervisor in the parking lot behind the Main Post Office, on Pleasant Street in New Bedford around 5:45 p.m. on May 6, 2010. According to the complaint, as the supervisor was speaking with VIGEANT, when VIGEANT began striking the supervisor in the head and body with his fists. They went to the ground, where the struggle continued. When police arrived, the supervisor was transported to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken pelvis, two cracked ribs and lacerations to the face that required stitches.

If convicted VIGEANT faces up to 20 years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

Judge Sorokin set VIGEANT’s detention hearing for Tuesday, May 17, 2011.

U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, Robert Bethel, Postal Inspector for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Chief Ronald Teachman of the New Bedford Police Department made the announcement today.

The details contained in the Complaint are allegations. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

  1. The supervisor was approached by the customer whom seems to have a disability. The SCS didnt do anything to provoke the attack and was the victim. Hostility can be in the post office and outside the post office. You never know where or when it can happen.
From what I heard, the SCS is a quiet and well liked individual.
Why must people always judge others? It is what it is……

  2. Want some details? The dude was a random nut job strolling around the streets of New Bedford, box cutter in tow, who had been in and out of the post office all day trying to mail suspicious packages to Obama, the Pope, etc. He had not even seen the supervisor previously and simply waited for the next person to walk out of the door before he snapped and randomly, and very violently attacked the supervisor, who had genuinely offered to help the guy after seeing he was obviously troubled. Get your facts straight before channeling the anonymous internet thug in yourself.

The supervisor is not scum and was not “put” in his position like an evil pawn. He put in his (many) years and started from the bottom and legitimately worked his way up over many years. He is well liked by his employees, and the community he still supports and serves.

Ignorant scum? That would be people like some of you.

  3. Sure is easy to strike a nerve with some of the more simple minded here. You people make me LMAO! Thanks for the replies that show the IQ levels that prove why the contract was passed. Personally, I’m moving on to better things so please get your last reply in that I won’t even see. Have a great life and a great postal career.

  4. “Without getting into a pissing contest pissing contest”, huh? Good thing since your posts illustrate that you are prone to pissing down your own leg. At least that’s what “most people I know” believe. BTW – If the shoe fits, ya better dump the piss out. LMAO.

  5. Without getting into a pissing contest, battle of wits with an unarmed opponent, or baseless name calling. I will just say that I hope all that disagree with my comments are right and everyone’s job turns out rosy since it is too late to change the vote out come now. Was probably just my 30+ years of experience that lead me to the wrong conclusions. Sorry if I’ve offended anyone and if that’s not good enough for you then maybe we can meet in person so I can defend myself more to my satisfaction.

  6. You are correct Seymour. Has anyone ever thought just “maybe” it was a nutjob customer? Hopefully this thread gets revisited once the story unfolds. The article is tiny bit vague, but perhaps posters should learn how to read more effectively before they start running their mouth.

  7. The comments from 3 of you are clearly inappropriate and I hope you’r just posting for the shock value. However, if you are serious, you need to take a good look at yourself and try to determine when it was that you lost the ability to think rationally. If you don’t like your job, then f–k’n QUIT. There are few times when a physical assault might be called “justified”. Because you disagree with a supervisor, or because he/she is “mean” to you is not justification for a broken pelvis, two cracked ribs and lacerations to the face that required stitches.

To the mental giant that wrote – “Most people I know will be losing their homes, cars, and maybe even families as a direct result of such losses…” You’re just a damn liar.

  8. It must be a severe case of myopia that has left “Disgruntled”
without the ability to read Art.37 of the proposed agreement…
    His assertions are bogus.
Fortunately, most everyone else READ THE CONTRACT and
    voted YES.
Have your Local President READ THE CONTRACT TO YOU.

  9. This is only the begining. After this TA passes, as it appears it will, who will get the reprecussions of reverting all the 40 hour jobs and reposting them as 30 hour positions without even fixed days off. Maybe everyone that voted yes will just blame themselves and take the 25%+ pay cut as OK. Most people I know will be losing their homes, cars, and maybe even families as a direct result of such losses. Not something that people usally take lightly.

  10. Looks like Vigeant is probably going to get an I.I or perhaps a Disciplinary Letter of Warning after all is done. I`m sure the Supervisor was a Gentleman and did not provoke this kind of behavior, right! When you put Scum in Management positions, this is the result, just saying…..

  11. It must have been personal.. Sorry, he could not wait until he was off federal property. Because, chances are he probably asked for this intent meeting of the
    fist..kicking his butt..
