The Postal Service has announced that retail operations at the Strip Station office, located at 3100 Industrial Road in Las Vegas, will close as of end of the business day on Friday Feb. 25, 2011.

The Post Office Box operation will still remain in operation for the immediate future, but the plans are to close that portion of the building later this year and relocate the 1,000 boxes.

Last year, the Postal Service lost more than $7.5 billion and has been evaluating locations across the country looking for redundancies in service and ways to increase efficiency without severely impacting customer service and access.

The public was first notified last year and public comments were solicited and considered before the final decision was made by USPS Headquarters.

The move will save the cost of building maintenance, cooling, lighting, trash removal and staffing.

The personnel assigned to the retail function will be reassigned elsewhere. In addition, the carrier operation will move out of the building and carriers will operate out of nearby stations.

“We need to be environmentally responsible and not unnecessarily waste resources,” said Postal Spokesman David Rupert “We also are called to be fiscally responsible, as the Postal Service receives no tax dollars and we are currently dealing with the largest decline in finances in our history.”

The nearest Post Office retail location is the Garside Station, 1801 S. Decatur Blvd., Las Vegas NV. The retail hours at the main office M – F from 8:30 – 5:00 p.m. and Sat 9–3.
