Local APWU Calls For Congressional Investigation of Oakland, California Mail Center

Oakland APWU President Fred Jacobs urges other locals to follow suit in requesting an investigation.

letters to congress

Dear Chairman, Representative and Senators:

We, the undersigned Oakland Local 78 APWU members, Oakland Post Office P&DC bid cluster Postal Service employees, union officials, customers, concerned citizens, and constituents of the 9th Congressional District, over the years have stood by helplessly and dismayed as the Postal Service deteriorated. The methodical decline of the Postal Service has been primarily caused by a conspiracy involving special interest groups, Postal Service Headquarters, and some members of Congress, with the objective of privatizing the Postal Service. We have watched as Postal Service Headquarters pandered to large mailers to the detriment of the public, small businesses, non profit organizations, Postal Service employees, and the Postal Service itself.

For years, management has falsified figures regarding the volume of mail processed and delivered at the Oakland Post Office P&DC bid cluster (1675- 7th Street, Oakland, CA 94615); understaffed postal operations based on falsified figures; discriminated against injured employees; and used inept managers to run these operations using outdated equipment that is in serious disrepair. These practices have caused delayed mail delivery, the closure of facilities, hiring freezes, unsafe working conditions, blatant violations of Federal laws and the employees’ Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the loss of numerous Postal Service jobs.

It is time for the new leadership in Congress and the new administration to take a serious and sincere look at the Postal Service’s business practices. We urge Congress to conduct a comprehensive and thorough investigation of the Oakland Post Office P&DC bid cluster, that will include interviews with craft employees and visits to all facilities.

Privatizing the Postal Service would give private industry a responsibility that it cannot handle adequately and mail would not be under the protection of Federal law. People living in remote areas would be denied mail service or it would become very expensive for mail because of delivery cost and volume. Moreover, many jobs would be lost.

Yes, it is true, the Postal Service has its problems just as other businesses do; however, the United States Postal Service moves more mail more cheaply and efficiently than any other government or private systems in the world.

The Postal Service is a vital public service. It connects citizens like nothing else. You can be at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, in prison, or even homeless, yet you still get your mail. Now it’s time to revive the Postal Service for the common good and to protect a service that citizens need and deserve. The Postal Service a place where jobs can be saved! 1. The Oakland postal hub is a den of thieves. I’ve lost two valuable packages there. The tracking basically stopped at Oakland and the packages were gone. I know of others who have experienced the same thing. Step one in improving the USPS is rooting out employees who are dishonest but unfortunately the supervisors and inspectors don’t care and are probably complicit. Unless theft by postal employees is stopped the USPS will continue to decline.

  2. Perhaps this can also include the P&DC in san franciso because it sounds too familiar and who knows maybe is also hapenning at other facilities, but like they said it takes only one and here come the rest.

  3. The another thang on my mind “Light Duty”. Why are they treated better then employee injured on the job. How many hours are light duty employee suppose to get. I know some that get 8 hours. When other employees are sent home. What’s up with that?

  4. Privatizing the Postal Service would give private industry a responsibility alright one that knows everything about you but you are not allowed to know about them. This has already begun. The USPS FOIA is no longer available to the public. Now a person who wants to know the record system where their own personal information is located can’t. They have denied the access to this information. If you can not identify the record system by number and title exactly that contains your information you will not get it. Freedom of Information? Not in this country. You now have no right to know what they have on file and where this information is. They keep this information for 30 years and with computer matching if you leave the USPS your next job may not be a government job or coming soon a private one either.

  5. If you want to get rid of 6 day delivery, the sender is the one to ask. People who don’t mind 5 day delivery should not even be asked. The direct mailer, business, nonprofit are the ones who want 6 day delivery. It really is up to that customer. We are a service and should ALWAYS keep 6 day delivery.

  6. When will you realize this is a Holocaust? First the Unions act in Collusion to reduce the workforce and allow terrorism. Many members of my postal family and their families continue to be tortured to death. Call it what it is a holocaust.

  7. Good luck!

The pacific area is in san diego Ca, you should contact tom wood apwu president and set up an informational picket!

  8. At last someone is taking some initiative! Good luck, and the rest of the country needs to follow suit. Even if your plant/office isn’t on the chopping block.

Many people say they wouldn’t miss that 6th day of delivery, that is until they don’t have it. We are vital to all those in public office. Who do you think runs all those political post cards etc. for upcoming elections. And delivers them to each and every registered voter? The USPS.

Like you mentioned, if things changed, and I don’t mean for the better. All those rural folks would see their delivery disappear. They would be forced to get a PO box or pay a fee for mail delivery. Everyone has forgotten the part of the USPS, that S stands for SERVICE.
