Association for Postal Commerce

“From today’s MTAC meeting: ‘The USPS today at the MTAC meeting announced an unprecedented route adjustment process as a result of a joint effort between the USPS and the NALC. The USPS said it needs to eliminate 9200 city carrier routes in FY 2009 in order to meet its budget goals. It said the route adjustments could impact 50 million addresses, 85,000-90,000 carrier routes and 5,000 delivery units. The USPS already has eliminated 1100 routes a change that took effect November 15. Adjustments will begin again on January 5 and continue until early April. The USPS urged mailers to update their address lists on a monthly basis over the next 4-5 months because a significant number of routes may be changed or eliminated. The USPS plans to post the information on its RIBBS web site as the adjustments are made.”

Now if they eliminated the management component that would be more fair than giving carriers more work

  13. Cal says:

Hey bigDORC, the problem is that there are WAY, WAY too many of you useless management types. The service must be steamlined by eliminating the fat. In other words, people like you, who have no “jobs”, only positions. In fact, it makes no difference whether you do your “job” or not, because you are superfluous.

If they go to a five day delivery A lot of people will lose their job. Every office has carriers, clerks, andmailhandlers for a six day delivery. The plants have clerks and mailhandlers for a seven day schedule.

  19. scott says:

How many times do they need to route adjustments, all routes are supposed to be 8 hours now, if they did their job right on evaluations, so that means that anything added is over 8 hours right? Why dont they eliminate some management positions instead of 9,200 city carrier routes. Again, it always goes back to the guy that is actually doing the majority of the work, put more on him, but dont downsize the management positions! What a joke, hey Potter you are prime management material for IMG, The Big 3 or any Financial institution! Make sure you fly your luxury jet to the next board meeting!

  20. dave says:

its true sorry to say, but we do have some runners out there, who most of the time do without their lunches and breaks just to look good with sups. then their routes are added on, their body breaks down (backs, feet, knees) and before you know it they are in the office for not performing to “standard”, and our union represents them the best they can, sometimes they are non union (i wish we could charge the scabs) anyway the po is in a mess we all know it, we keep giving up service by closing offices early, letting other companys take our packages from us, because the idiots running this business doesnt know their — from a hole in the ground.

So why does JPotter need a $375,000 loan when he just received a 39% increase? Hmmmm is he having trouble living within his means? Greed and power drive us to do and say incredible things, but we are all in the driver’s seat when we make bad decisions. Too bad the PUBLIC isn’t more aware of the inner workings of the USPS and how it will affect their privacy and pocketbook when privatization takes place. Knowledge is POWER – so read how to protect yourself as best you can thru the contract and any applicable Federal and State Laws. It can even be more interesting than the TV. Check out the film, “Why We Fight”.

  28. Fed Up at Tower Station, CO says:

You know, our station manager (Little Joe G) gave a stand-up a couple days ago letting us know that all overtime is going to be eliminated. This is set to occur just after they add to everyone’s routes and take reuired case equipment away from us at this heavy volume station. It’s almost laughable. I even think these management bozos would get a good laugh if they could hear a recording of the BS the try to feed us. As far as I am concerned, the USPS should eliminate all positions the require neck-ties, dresses and especially clip-board experts. Let us run the show ourselves. Couldn’t possibly get any worse. For sure all the money wasted on grievance processing and settlements would be immediately saved.

  29. Postal and happy says:

There is an easy fix. First get rid of every TE. The TEs are taking up our OT hours and they are doing a HORRIBLE job of delivering the mail.
Next the cripples have to go. Sorry guys but if you can’t do the job get into a different craft, or retire. Finally has anyone ever seen any manager do anything right??? We could get rid of all of them, and I bet things would run better. On a side note Young should step down. That guy sold us out on the last contract.

  30. Sean says:

Quit wasting millions and millions on useless gadgets that dont work and have nothing to do with the delivery of the mail!!! This includes 3 out of every 4 worthless supervisors that pretend to work but basically walk around all day and sometimes answer the phone!!! The money wasted every day for things that have nothing to do with carrying mail needs to be eliminated and someone needs to be held accountable for the waste and gross mismanagement!!

  31. John D says:

As a carrier over the years, I’ve seen so many “fellow” carriers tell new employees one or more of the following:
    1) Slow down – your working yourself out of a job
    2) Don’t come back in from the street eany earlier than ______ (fill in the blank).
    3) Me and a few other carriers will meet you behind ________ (name a store) where we can hang for an hour or two to justify our OT

And some of us blame management when the Unions have turned a blind eye to the above. Now look at how UPS and FEDEX employees look and work in comparison to us. We look like homeless people with our shirts hung outside our pants and the slow shuffle of a walk we do from the vehicle to the box and back. And, yes, I am a proud Union member for over 28 years!

  32. Steve says:

Customer Connect???? It’s pretty tough to try and talk customers into using OUR service, when our window hours were jsut reduced, the TE’s misdeliver so much mail, and we don’t get sale flyers until the day of the sale! Customers are losing confidnece in us.

  33. Jim Class says:

Our office has 2 – 204b’s that are “lightduty” (o BS – disabled) carriers. They like the 204b deal, because they get OT pay and penalty pay. if our region had any balls, they would send these lazy retards to ASP and put them on salary. Why should our union care about them, they are getting dues & these 2 people can vote in our elections, besides one of the 204b’s is the wife of our Union VP (and nominee for presidnet)

  34. Numbnuts says:

How about eliminating 9200 of the a&&holes running this f$#ked up place.

  35. J says:

Until everyone stops pointing the finger at eachother, craft and management. We have horrible managers that don’t know how to lead but for everyone of them there is a craft members without integrity to do the job in the amount of time it takes without streching everthing out and filing BS grievances. Until we all realize that we all work for USPS, craft and management alike and that if the ship sinks, WE ALL GO DOWN, we will not be able to resolve anything. If you sent the Airforce and the Army into battle but they are too busy fighting eachother internally, how could you expect to win a battle. We have to stop pointing fingers and all do our part of doing the right thing and trying to get those individuals that are not, to change. If we don’t see the picture that is painted on the wall by now, we are bound to fail and when we fail being craft or management is not going to matter, we will all be out of jobs. If anything managment will have the upper hand getting new jobs because most of them will look better on paper when they are looking for a new job. IT’S REAL PEOPLE!!! Stop complaining and do your part to fix the problem. Who caused it…. is too late to think about!! FOCUS ON WHAT WE CAN DO, NOT WHAT WE CAN’T DO AND COMPLAINING IS GOING TO ONLY TAKE AWAY WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN PRODUCTIVE TIME!!!!!!! And for those of you that have smart @S5 comments about this posting… guess what? YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM AND WHEN YOUR ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN OR BACK AT WHAT YOU HAD, YOUR GOING TO BE THINKING JUST LIKE THE INDIVIDUALS THAT WORKED FOR EASTERN AIRLINES! Just do it! Your job with integrity!

  37. MAILMAN JOE says:

HEY FELLOWS LETS TELL IT LIKE IT IS. ITS NOT BUSH’S FAULT OR CHENEY’S OR RUMBY, WHATS WRONG WITH SOME OF U CLOWNS? LETS PUT THE BLAME WHERE IT REALLY BELONGS. ITS ALL OF OUR FAULT. MANAGEMENT, LETS FACE IT, U COULD GET RID OF 50%OF THE SUPERVISORS AT ANY STATION AND THE OPERATION WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED IN THE LEAST. IN FACT, IT PROBABLY WOULD IMPROVE. MOST OF THEM DO LESS THAN WE EVEN THINK THEY DO. NOW FOR US. THERE ARE TOO MANY SLUGS IN THE POST OFFICE CARRYING MAIL. U ALL KNOW WHO U ARE. SUPERVISORS HAVE ALLOWED THESE CARRIERS TO DRAG THEIR FEET, CAUSING THE OPERATION TO AT TIMES STALL. INSTEAD OF THE SUP’S DOING WHAT THEY SHOULD DO, THEY GIVE THE WORK TO ANOTHER CARRIER AND TELL THEM TO HURRY UP AND TRY TO MAKE 5 P.M. THEN THE UNION SUPPORTS THE SLUG. TELLS THE SUP TO CEASE HARRASSING THE CARRIER. NOW, FOR THE CRIPPLES. ITS ONE THING TO GET HURT BOYS AND GIRLS AND THEN HEAL UP AND YOUR BACK TO CARRYING MAIL. ITS ANOTHER WHEN YOUR COMPLETELY WORTHLESS, GETTING PAID FULL WAGES DELIVERING A FEW EXPRESSES AND ANSWERING A FEW PHONE CALLS. IF YOUR CRIPPLED AND CAN’T DO THE JOB ANY LONGER, U NEED TO RETIRE OR BE PLACED INTO ANOTHER POSITION. SORRY,TIMES CHANGE, AND IT APPEARS THEY ARE A CHANGING. PRESIDENT B.O. NEEDS TO APPOINT AN I.G. THATS INSPECTOR GENERAL FOR U NONE MILITARY TYPES. THE IG NEEDS TO LOOK AT THE POST OFFICE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. MAKE ADJUSTMENTS WHERE NECESSARY. STREAM LINE THE FORCE AND RETIRE MOST OF THE STUFF THAT SOME CLOWN IN MANAGEMENT HAS THOUGHT UP TO SUBSTAINATE THEIR JOB. QUIT DOING EVERYTHING THAT DOESN’T HAVE ANY THING REALLY TO DO WITH GETTING THE MAIL TO OUR CUSTOMERS. FINALLY FELLOWS THE TRUTH IS OFTEN UGLY, BUT ITS STILL THE TRUTH. MANAGEMENT IS NOT ALWAYS WRONG, WE ARE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT. WE ALL KNOW WHO THE WORTHLESS SUP’S ARE AND THE CARRIERS. TROUBLE IS GETTING RID OF THESE LAZY BASTARDS. THATS WHERE THE IG COMES IN. GIVE HIM THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE THE HARD DECISIONS AND YOU’LL SOON SEE AN MORE EFFECTIVE POSTAL SERVICE. THATS WHAT MAILMAN JOE THINKS.

  38. Carrier Cathy says:

I’ve been a nalc member for all of my career,21yrs. The union is great for getting pay raises but has done little to help the carriers work conditions. Every change management makes, makes our job harder to perform. 11/2008 no longer a member. When they start working for the people the represent I’ll rejoin.

  39. xcarrier says:

Get rid of the unions. The unions protects employees who do not want to work. The city routes should go to the evaulate route system like rural carriers.

  40. WannaBeFree says:

The air was a little nippy (17 degrees)this morning as we listened to our ‘snoopervisor’tell us we no longer need to submit a 3996 for mail we have been told to curtail AND let’s try not to have everyone call in at 2pm at the same time. Oh brother – We have 40 routes AND over 1500 grievances in 4 years
    1) We’re at 225% additional pay at the base straight rate for Art. 8 violations;
    2)$50 compensatory evertime a carrier is denied the opportunity to meet with their steward OR are interrupted while meeting with their steward OR when management tries to pre-determine the amount of time they’ll allow them to meet;
    3)$100 comp. award for failing the provide info timely OR accurately OR completely – paid to our branch if its class action or to the individual if harmed;
    4) $50 for Failed to Meet – paid to our branch
AN THE LIST GOES ON & ON & ON – This is clearly a case of insanity.
    4)

  41. maderma says:

hey dave, some regular carriers may be runners but, i know first hand that a lot of regulars tell ptf’s and te’s not to run and then they turn around and give them 7 relays and say it should only take them and hour. so guess what when routes get added on to, sometimes it’s the regulars own fault.

I worked for the postal service for 18 year’s. I started as a casual and ended up one of those worthless supervisor’s. Luckily I made some wise investment choices while working there and was able to end my career there in 2003. I knew then where the postal sevice was heading and remember everyone telling me I was crazy to leave. My life and financial situation have improved dramatically. The real bonus was that I don’t have to listen to whiny, worthless postal employees that make three times more than they are worth. The Postal service need’s to be eliminated immediately.

What a bunch of overpaid, unskilled, cry babies! I Worked at a large City office for 14 years before I was lucky enough to find real, meaningful work that paid just as well but utilized my educationa and work skills. You are nothing more than delivery boys (and girls). Yet you expect to be treated like royalty? You wouldn’t last three days in any of today’s military. Why? Becuase you don;t know how to take orders without becoming insubordinate, whiny and spiteful. YOu spend a couple of hours under the observation of a supervisor and you resent it. You mideliver mail and the customer complains and you retaliate at every opportunity. Your fellow worker asks you a legitimate, work related question and you sarcastically tell him or her that they need to ask a supervisor as they don’t pay you to ‘think’. (Maybe they don’t because you can’t!) How long do you think any of you would survive as a business owner if you had employee like you and most of your fellow coworkers?
Need 8 people to do a job but two have called in sick. Not unusaula in the PO but in the private sector if you can’t be depended on you are out looking for work elsewhere. Don’t blame your supervisor or Postmaster, look at yourselves and own up to you own work ethic. The business I am in now? I would NEVER hire 80% of the former coworkers I used to work with. I would be out of business or looking over my shoulders all of the time. The 20% who do their jobs and don’t B*tch all the time over petty crap should leave the rest of you to fall flat on your faces when the supervisors are no longer there. Do you honestly think you are capable of adjusting work schedules to match workload becuase of unscheduled absences while keeping in mind dispatch schedules and closeout times? It probably isn;t as easy as it appears… espeacially when you have to spend so much time listening to a bunch of cry babies

  51. d-fus says:

“Time wasting practice!” was the favorite phrase used by our supervisor. Fifty nine signed a petition letter asking for his removal for causing a “Hositle Work Environment”. Petition ignored. Supervisor promoted/detailed to manager and got into a heated altercation with a neighbor to the post office building after damaging their property with his private vehicle. Supervisor calls his immediate superior manager: “Stupid” and get away with it. Superisor promoted to OIC and was caught with a willing female employee, on the clock, in the post office building, having sex. Must be related to a cheta, getting it off in seconds, not time wasting practice. OIC was only sent back to his old position, she was transfered to another office so another manager can get in on the booty. Our new manager instructs (returned) supervisor to report to the main office, supervisor refuses to follow instuctions. Our new manager calls postal police to have him escorted out of the building. Supervisor call his buddy in District office, our new manager is immediately transfered to another post office ran by a buddy of the supervisor. Four times postal police had to escort employees out of our building, one in full combat fatigues. One was the cronie supervisor. One time Para-medics had to assist another letter carrier out of the office, he was screaming: “I am not a Robot!” His supervisor was the girl friend of the over sexed ex-OIC supervisor. When the Iraq and Afgan combat veterans become employed in the post office, a new round of going postal will occur.

You know if the Union’s would get on board and work with Management to ensure we are all effective and efficient, it would benefit us all. However, all the Union and it’s members want to do it ride the clock and make as much overtime as they can. They are not interested in working 8 hours for 8 hours pay. The belief by the Union and it’s members that Management is always trying to screw them is rediculous and absurd.

  53. Rick L. says:

Gee! The 1st thing management wants to do is get rid of carriers. I guees it nver crossed management’s mind to send all 204B’s back to the craft and maybe get rid of some employees that don’t have anything to do with delivery (like supervisors). Remember, before any carriers are let go, all TE’s must go 1st.Under Management’s current carriers will have their own personal supervisor with them 8 hours a day telling them what they are doing wrong and how bad they ars.

  54. Anonymous says:

Ill throw in my 2 cents. Although management does have a lot fat to trim, I can honestly with a straight face tell everyone that will listen that there are a lot of bad carriers out there. All of you out there with restrictions need to go. All of you sick leave abusers need to be cut loose, any other employer in the nation would have fired you a long time ago. All of you out there taking extra lunches, breaks etc need to go. Lets all be honest, there are a lot of gravy routes out there that need to be added to. The ship is sinking and all any one wants to do is whine about management this and that. The NALC spends entirely too much time protecting the weakest 5% of employees. NALC cut these slackers loose they are suffocating the post office and your other productive union members. Now before you start with the management accusations, know that im not in management. Im a card carying NALC member and im proud of it. But we as carriers DO need to look into the mirror and man up. As does management, but thats another post

All supervisors and managers can be replaced by cctv. That’s all the saving the Post Office will ever need!!

  56. money says:

As a member of Management and former city carrier for 14 years I see both sides of all issues. I feel that the decisions made in the usps are made by individuals who have no idea the difficulty in delivering mail, working the sales windows and working in plants. Besides less than adequate facilities, lack of supplies, and not enough craft employees, upper management tries to create this scenario where front line management is responsible for any service or budget failures. The realization that the budget is doomed before it began, there is only so much to cut, there is only so many times you can ask your best employees to help out again. As an organization unless we learn to drastically change (the same way our country finally woke up and elected the most qualified man Obama)
We need to work together not against each other.
If we are truely looking to save, then eliminate all the cars that all the District Managers and employees have. Lets eliminate Public Affairs, lets reduce consumer affairs office, lets STOP ADVERTISING, people either buy stamps or not, not because they see an ad about it. Lets eliminate these elaborate stamp unveilings and reduce the management staff in Washington including the Board of Directors. Finally lets sell the flat sorting machines we bought, the mail is down and most of the flats come carrier bundles already anyway.

The USPS ship is going down, just like the Titanic, we too have a design flaw, top heavy management, and lowsy ones at that. Management says, well UPS has higher rates for shipping. Well yes is some cases, but me as well as a vast number of people, we don’t care we want a reputation and service and that is where UPS and Fed-Ex shine. I think management had better stop crunching numbers and focus on the people themselves. People is what runs the business, not numbers. I went to my local p.o. and bought stamps from 17 today. Oh that number is so rude!!

  59. Obama says:

We will start by eliminating 9200 management positions and see how that works to start with. We will then cut the postmasters window time down to 4 hours a day, their asses keep getting wider by the minute from sitting infront of the computer at this site anyway, and will install pay phones in all offices, with no change machines. We might be able to sell stamps for 10 cents again. Maybe they will put my picture on that stamp!!

DUMP THE UNIONS! Why reward unproductive workers just because they’ve been employed longer than someone else? Unions are dinosaurs as is collective bargaining! Postal workers should be paid based upon productivity and merit and not through attrition! Why pay someone $50k who delivers LESS mail than someone at $30k who delivers more mail in less time than the higher wage earner? Unions promote sloth and ineptitude.Union memebership is DOWN across the board and hopefully for the sake of the USPS continues its decline into extinction! I already know the Union response, There will be lots of namecalling because that’s all they’re good for. So bring it on! I’m PROUD to be the cowardly self-centered scab, I’ve already been called by Union presidents, who by the way will not meet one on one to discuss our differences!
