National Postal Mail Handlers Union Addresses Early Out Rumors

The National Postal Mail Handlers Union (NPMHU) issued the following MEMO

RE: Possible VERA: Voluntary Early Retirement

With rumors circulating and misleading stories being published, we are writing to provide a quick update on the issue of Voluntary Early Retirements for mail handlers.

The Postal Service has formally requested permission from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management to obtain authority to offer a VERA to certain postal employees either late in 2008 or early 2009. OPM is expected to act on that request in the next few days or weeks, at which point the NPMHU and the Postal Service will meet to discuss any and all early out options. Until such authority is granted, and such discussions occur, there is no additional information to distribute.

As always, the National Office will continue to address the situation and will alert our members when there is something substantive and accurate to report.
